Forever inspired by the natural landscapes that surround us, at home or away, I am drawn to textiles involving nature. We had a recent trip to a peaceful little Spanish town in Almeria. I watched the sky and the wildlife surrounded by incense and tropical plants dreaming of my next special something for the shop.
That something is this fabric. Made from handmade unbleached yarn, the stitched motifs are traditional tribal art, inspired by local and natural forms. We are so pleased to have had this made especially for us. I was able to discuss all the details with the maker, who then communicated with the weavers. Feeling lightweight and not see-through, the base shade reminds me of dried stone and desert sand and has a warm oatmeal tone.
Decisions on what to make in this fabric could range from a maxi dress or skirt, to maybe an oversized shirt or blouse. Alternatively, if you don't have time to sew, just take a huge panel to the beach enjoying wrapping it around you and watching it flowing in the breeze! This is very precious and I feel lucky to have it.
Kotpad handloom is a vegetable-dyed fabric woven by the tribal weavers of the Mirgan community in the Odisha region of India. These ethically produced cottons are woven using age-old traditions to make fabrics without the use of chemicals, they describe their work as "a stunning amalgamation of nature's gifts & human ingenuity". These textiles have been woven with particular care and love and the odd little uneven threads and texture are all part of their charm, creating a rough feel on the fabric.
Note: Hand-woven fabrics can vary in shade and tone, due to the natural dying techniques used
