Selvedge or 'Selvage' denim (depending on the area of the World you're living in) is something I have been studying for a good while. After this slight obsession with the world of raw denim, I finally invested in my own pair of proper Japanese selvedge denim jeans and I am not disappointed. Japan is home to denim production in it's purest form, they own some of the best traditional shuttles looms in the world, not to mention the care and precision that goes into producing the worlds best denim. I can officially tell you that I have no regrets about my jeans, the texture of the denim surpasses any others I have owned. Though rigid looking, they have an unexplained comfort. So I am therefore very excited to include our first-ever selvedge denim in the Faberwood collection.
I chose this modern and unusual denim for its 'dead black' flat vibe, it's smart with a different looking satin weave, quite smooth compared to a regular twill denim. I also love the subtle sheen to the finish, it's quite spectacularly sophisticated! I can Imagine a refined-looking chore/work style jacket or a pair of jeans (obviously). But the softness would be suitable for a heavyweight shirt, structured trousers or a skirt. I would like to insist the red selvedge line is included though, (for edging of pockets etc.) because it is simply just too beautiful to leave out!
This is a perfectly manageable 12oz denim (considered a medium weight in denim terms) produced by a renowned factory called Kuroki in Japan who work closely with high-end denim designers specialising in the production of custom made clothing. Kuroki has a strong sustainability ethos, taking special measures to look after their environment while producing textiles. After careful cotton buying, the whole process of weaving, dyeing and finishing is done in-house. They then turn the wastewater into clean water which is regenerated for agricultural use.
Finally, there is something in the way this fabric is woven that has given it an 'ever so slight' stretch in the way it moves, especially on the bias. I think this will be a sewing glory, where every fold and feature with be a pleasurable experience. In time this denim will fade to grey in high wear areas but is more resilient than traditional blue denim. Oh, how I am reaching for a Merchant and Mills sewing pattern as I speak!
A note on care and laundering this fabric - the factory notes 0-3% possible shrinkage. I had a chat with my denim supplier who advised against pre-washing prior to sewing, as it would wash out the starch making it less easy to sew with. In fact, would you even ever wash it?!! There is nothing worse than spending time and energy on a garment with the fear of shrinking afterwards, so I did my own wash test. I cold soaked a 15cm square piece and I found no shrinkage but please err on the side of caution and adding a little allowance within your pattern is advised.
To avoid creasing, this fabric is packaged rolled in a poster style tube
