It feels good to have indigo fabric back in the shop and this hand-dyed cotton from The Gambia is so stunning. We have managed to source through a wonderful supplier who knows and visits the creators of all our fabulous African fabrics.

Traditionally Indigo dyed fabrics in West Africa usually represented abundance and fertility with it's rich varied hues of blue. This stripe comes on a damask weave, which historically was often used to 'mimic' silk to show a sign of wealth. This light/medium weight fabric feels lovely and silky that will make a garment really stand out as something special. Perfect for trousers or dresses, there is also a wonderful finish on the selvedge that you could incorporate within a sewing project. I also like that the stripe design can run either horizontally or vertically, you are most definitely getting a one off design created by the family that produce these amazing textiles, all by hand, from a town called Sukuta.

This fabric would make lovely wide trousers for walking on the beach! Please see note below regarding care of these fabulous fabrics.

About African natural Indigo fabrics: due to these textiles being dyed with natural indigo excess dye can rub off easily onto your hands or sewing machine. It is really important to pre-soak this fabric in cold water for at least 30 minutes, then wash at 30° C and rinse in cold water. Repeat until water runs clear.
